Common Web Browsers are now with HKPCA Root CA3 Certificate Included

Hongkong Post Certification Authority (HKPCA) has already completed the rollover of Root CA from 1 July 2019 (refer to https://www.eCert.gov.hk/news/press/87.html for details). Since then, the Sub CA of "Hongkong Post Root CA 3" ("Root CA3") has been used for the issuance of all types of e-Cert (Server) - including e-Cert (Server), e-Cert (Server) with "Wildcard" feature, e-Cert (Server) with "Multi-domain" feature, Extended Validation e-Cert (Server) and Extended Validation e-Cert (Server) with "Multi-domain" feature - whereas the "Hongkong Post e-Cert CA 1" (Root CA1) and its sub CA has ceased to issue any new certificates.

The Root CA3 certificate has been included in the trusted root certification programs of common web browser vendors, such as Mozilla and Microsoft in May 2019, Google in September 2020, and Apple in October 2021. Therefore, subscribers are no longer required to install the cross-certificate to applications such as web servers for being trusted by common web browsers, when the web browser users use any of the following web browsers on supported platforms ("Supported Web Browser"): -

  • Google Chrome and other supported web browsers on Android 11 or above
  • Microsoft Edge and other supported web browsers on Windows 10 or above
  • Apple Safari and other supported web browsers on iOS 15 or above, iPadOS 15 or above, macOS 12 or above
  • Mozilla Firefox version 68 or above on all supported platforms

Web browser users who are not using a Supported Web Browser are recommended to upgrade their web browsers to a Supported Web Browser as soon as possible.

Besides, if any application systems of the subscribers or relying parties explicitly trust the Root CA1 certificate at present, they are reminded to add the Root CA3 certificate in the relevant trust list of their application systems as well.

More information is available at web pages of e-Cert (Server).
